Why Vegan Makeup?
You may be asking yourself, “why does it matter if I choose vegan makeup?” The reasons you’ll hear most often are that it’s better for you, the animals, and the environment. But how so? It’s better for you because vegan makeup often performs better. Vegan waxes and other non-animal ingredients can often be more moisturizing than tallow or produce a bolder color than Carmine.
The more cruelty-free and vegan makeup items we choose over other options that require animal products and testing, the less cruelty afflicted on animals. For example, when rabbits are used for product testing, makeup is applied to their eyes. Rabbits don’t have tear ducts so they can’t cry out harmful substances.
Lastly, vegan cosmetics are not always better for the environment if they are not clean, but if you are choosing vegan and clean beauty products, then you are often using ingredients that are less bio-accumulative, more nourishing, and will eventually show you better and longer-lasting results.
What makes vegan makeup vegan?
Makeup that is vegan means exactly what it sounds like. Products that contain zero ingredients derived from animals. That means zero dairy, honey, color ingredients like “Carmine” that are derived from beetles, and a whole lot more.
There are a lot of other ingredients that can be non-vegan as well. Lanolin, a wax like substance used in a good amount of beauty products, is derived from sheep’s wool, making it not a vegan ingredient. Stearic acid, although plant based versions are possible to create in today’s market, is often derived from animal fat, and it is commonly used in cosmetics and other beauty products. Keratin, an ingredient commonly found in hair care and “anti-aging’ products, is usually derived from hair, nails, horns & hooves from animals, and can be nestled into your favorite product making it not a vegan option.
Being able to spot these ingredients is becoming a more simple process, as more and more brands are aiming to get the seal of vegan approval on their products, making it less of a vigorous research process for the average beauty product consumer to know if their beauty routine is a vegan routine.
Can non vegan brands make vegan makeup?
The short answer is yes. A lot of major makeup brands have products that are either accidentally vegan or are specifically vegan among a lineup of products that are not. Some brands that do not have fully vegan lines will specifically list a smaller grouping of their products as vegan and market them that way. It is important when looking through a non vegan brand’s products to do an extra step of research into the ingredients to ensure that it is 100% vegan and also that it is a cruelty free company. More on that later.
Does vegetarian makeup mean vegan?
Sometimes, but not always. Some brands sought after approval in the earlier days when vegetarian goals were more in the limelight compared to vegan ones. Older approvals of vegetarian approved may simply be outdated approvals, and the product may still be vegan after looking deeper into the ingredients of any given product.
There are many examples of vegetarian makeup that are not vegan, though. Many lip balms contain beeswax, which is a vegetarian ingredient, but does not qualify it as a vegan product.
Does organic mean vegan?
No. Organic vaguely means that products were created using ingredients that are sustainable to a certain degree, free from particular harsh chemicals and more. There are plenty of opportunities for an organic, non vegan ingredient to be added into a makeup product, therefore making it organic but not vegan.
Does cruelty free mean vegan?
No. Cruelty free status is given to companies that do not engage in cruel industry practices of testing products and ingredients on animals. There are plenty of cruelty free companies that abide by these standards while simultaneously using animal ingredients as part of their cosmetic creation procedure.
