Take a Hike: 5 Fueling Snacks for Hitting the Trails


Hiking is one of my favorite forms of exercise. Escaping into the wilderness allows for a bit of solitude and time to enjoy the birds, scenery, and natural wonders of the world. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is just around the bend, which means plenty of warm weather and sunshine–an ideal mix for hitting the trails. I’ve compiled a list of my go-to hiking snacks so that you too, can immerse yourself in the forest without going hungry. So, lace up your sneaks, pack some snacks, and head out for adventure!

5 Fueling Snacks for Hitting the Trails

1. Trail Mix

Yes, I realize that trail mix is an obvious snack choice for hikers, but I included it because it’s incredibly versatile–you can switch it up every time you head into the wilderness. I am a big fan of chocolate in my trail mix and always try to include some to ensure my sweet tooth is satisfied. The above mix contains dried cherries, roasted almonds, salted pumpkin seeds, and dark chocolate chunks–a simple, sweet-n-salty combo that’s full of antioxidants and healthy fats.

2. Bagel Sandwiches

Bagels are sturdy, portable, and depending on what you fill them with, pretty gourmet for trail food. Hummus, nut butters, raw or roasted veggies, non-dairy cream cheese, and baked tofu are some of my favorites (not all together, of course!). Don’t forget the condiments and garnishes! Spicy mustard, sprouts, smoked salt, or avocado can take any sandwich to the next level.

3. Clementines/Mandarins

Citrus fruits are not only refreshing, but really easy to eat while tackling the trails. I have found that clementines and mandarins make for ideal snacks because of their tiny size. They won’t weigh down your backpack or get crushed. Grapes and pre-cut apples also work well.

4. Roasted Chickpeas

I am really addicted to roasted chickpeas. For awhile, I was eating them almost every single day, whether I was hiking or not. Their high fiber content makes them ideal for keeping you full when you opt for longer treks. 5. Raw Veggies

It’s important to avoid snacks that will leave you feeling heavy or sluggish. Fresh-cut veggies are instant pick-me-ups because they are crunchy and nutritious. You could even pack a tiny container of your favorite dip if you’re feeling fancy.
