Macambo beans come from the Theobroma bicolor tree, a close relative of cacao—the plant chocolate comes from. In fact, “Theobroma” literally means “food of the gods.”
Native to the Amazon rainforest and parts of Central America, macambo has traditionally been consumed by Indigenous communities for generations. The seeds (often called beans) are harvested from large tropical fruit pods, then roasted or dried for snacking.
Think of them as somewhere between:
- a cacao bean
- a nut
- and a crunchy seed
…with a flavor all their own..
